    ABSTRACT="Next-generation 5G networks are rapidly expanding to support the growing
    demand for efficient connectivity in Internet of Things (IoT) and
    Machine-to-Machine (M2M) applications across various sectors (e.g.,
    agriculture, automotive, healthcare, smart cities, and manufacturing).
    Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) promises to transform manufacturing
    through Digital Twins while Industry 4.0 advances digitalization with
    Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), machine learning, big data, and cloud
    computing. Hence, achieving Ultra-low latency (ULL) is crucial for
    applications like robotic control. Although 5G powered by Software-Defined
    Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) have improved
    the network capacity and reduced the ULL constraints, challenges persist
    due to wireless signal unpredictability. To address these issues, this
    research proposes leveraging in-network applications to the network edge to
    implement ULL solutions for industrial and Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
    applications. Furthermore, we propose a hardware-based environment to
    validate data plane applications' performance, feasibility, effectiveness,
    and impact."

    abstract = {In cellular networks, a set of Base Stations (BSs) might be out of service and failed in the aftermath of natural disasters. One of the promising solutions to fix this situation is to send low altitude drones equipped with a small cellular BS (DBSs) to the target locations. This can provide cellular networks with vital communication links and make available temporary coverage for the users in unexpected circumstances. However, finding the minimum number of DBSs and their optimal locations are highly challenging issues. In this paper, a Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming formulation is provided, in which the DBSs’ location and the proper number of DBSs are jointly determined. An improved PSO-based algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize DBSs’ locations and find the minimum number of DBSs. As in the original PSO algorithm, the particles are randomly distributed in the initialization phase and a K-means-based clustering method is employed to generate the positions of the first-generation particles (DBSs). In addition, a custom communication protocol is presented for data exchange between the users’ equipment (UE) and the network controller. The proposed approach is evaluated through four simulation experiments implemented using Mininet-Wifi integrated with CopelliaSim. The acquired results show that the proposed solution based on the integration of PSO and K-means algorithms provides a low packet loss and latency. Moreover, it indicates that most of the users in the considered scenarios are covered by the DBSs.}

    abstract = {Demand for wireless video streaming services increases with users expecting to access high-quality video streaming experiences. Ensuring Quality of Experience (QoE) is quite challenging due to varying bandwidth and time constraints. Since most of today’s mobile devices are equipped with multiple network interfaces, one promising approach is to benefit from multipath communications. Multipathing leads to higher aggregate bandwidth and distributing video traffic over multiple network paths improves stability, seamless connectivity, and QoE. However, most of current transport protocols do not match the requirements of video streaming applications or are not designed to address relevant issues, such as networks heterogeneity, head-of-line blocking, and delay constraints. In this comprehensive survey, we first review video streaming standards and technology developments. We then discuss the benefits and challenges of multipath video transmission over wireless. We provide a holistic literature review of multipath wireless video streaming, shedding light on the different alternatives from an end-to-end layered stack perspective, reviewing key multipath wireless scheduling functions, unveiling trade-offs of each approach, and presenting a suitable taxonomy to classify the state-of-the-art. Finally, we discuss open issues and avenues for future work.}

    ABSTRACT={With 5G networks, new opportunities and challenges appear just around the
    corner. Applications in different trends (e.g., industry 4.0, agriculture,
    IoT, UAV) are gaining new envisions. The network's capabilities need to
    grow together with the high amounts of transmitted data and various network
    services. Supporting Ultra-low latency (ULL) applications with extremely
    low loss and delay variation is required. Despite the significant
    characteristics of the 5G networks, horizontal (e.g., distance, nodes
    processing) and vertical (e.g., NIC, OS, Hypervisor, Application) delays
    affect the performance of end-to-end communication. Unmanned aerial
    vehicles (UAVs), especially drones, are becoming an important application
    powered by the new network characteristics. We propose an in-network UAV
    collision avoidance algorithm in edge Programmable Data Planes. We explore
    the benefits of an edge P4-based device (e.g., High Performance,
    Reconfigurability, Protocol Independent) in a ULL use case (i.e., UAVs).
    The collision avoidance algorithm implemented in P4 can detect and
    fast-react to avoid possible impacts effectively.}

    ABSTRACT="Network monitoring is a fundamental task to provide good network management
    and performance. Since the SDN emergence, the In-band Network Telemetry
    (INT) has been demonstrated as an efficient network monitoring framework.
    Using INT, we can collect network information hop-by-hop directly from the
    data plane by including this information in the network production traffic.
    However, this information collection is limited by available packet size
    and processing overhead, making it critical to choose what data to collect
    and when to collect it. So, in this work, we propose the Inter-Packet Gap
    (IPG) per-hop monitoring using INT. We argue that by monitoring the IPG
    hop-by-hop, it is possible to correlate the data and identify network
    problems like network congestion, delay, and microbursts and their
    contributing flows. Our preliminary results show that IPGNET can
    efficiently detect the microbursts on multiple queues and report all the
    contributing flows.}

    abstract={The research community has recently proposed several solutions based on modern programmable switches to detect entirely in the data plane the flows exceeding pre-determined thra eshold in a time window, i.e., Heavy Hitters (HH). This is commonly achieved by dividing the network stream into fixed time slots and identifying each separately without considering the traffic trends from previous intervals. In this work, we show that using specified time windows can lead to high inaccuracies. We make a case for rethinking how switches analyze the incoming packets and propose to leverage per-flow Inter Packet Gap (IPG) analytics instead of using flow counters for HH detection. We propose an algorithm and present a P4 pipeline design using this new metric in mind. We implement our solution on P4 hardware and experimentally evaluate it against real traffic traces. We show that our results are more accurate than related work by up to 20% while reducing the control channel overhead by up to two orders of magnitude. Finally, we showcase a QoS-oriented application of the proposed dataplane-only IPG-based HH detection in a mobile network scenario.},

Recently, in-band Network Telemetry (INT) has been demonstrated as a powerful and efficient network monitoring framework. Using INT, network information hop-by-hop can be collected directly from the data plane by gathering this information in the production traffic. However, INT data collection is limited by available packet size and processing overhead, making it critical to choose what data to collect and when to collect it. In this demo, we propose the In-band Inter Packet Gap Network Telemetry (IPGNET) per-hop monitoring. We argue that by monitoring the IPG hop-by-hop, it is possible to correlate the data and identify: (i) Network problems like congestion and delays, finding their root cause, and (ii) Microbursts and their contributing flows.     abstract={Cloud-Network Slice (CNS) is defined as an end-to-end infrastructure composed by computing, networking, and storage resources and it is expected to be a key enabler for novel verticals such as Industry 4.0, IoT and Vehicular Networks. This paper presents the design, implementation and integration of the Architecture for Orchestration and Management of Cloud-Network Slices (CNS-AOM), a modular architecture to orchestrate and manage slice resources and services in CNSs. The CNS-AOM is designed and implemented considering three important characteristics: (i) the business model called Slice-as-a-Service (SlaaS); (ii) the multiple administrative and technological domains; and (iii) the slice elasticity, which means the capacity of dynamically growing and shrinking the slice resources to improve service performance. To prove the feasibility of our proposal, two Proofs of Concept (PoC) are implemented in real environments to validate the CNS-AOM. First, an end-to-end content distribution service (CDN) is deployed across three different cities in Brazil to emphasize the multiple domains. Second, we present an IoT service using a fully-featured commercial service platform called dojot, which is instantiated and orchestrated by the proposed architecture. The dojot slice is instantiated overseas in four cities across two countries. The evaluation for the CDN slice considers the appropriate metrics that should be monitored and the actual services that should be instantiated to meet the end-user's requirements depending on its location. Moreover, in the dojot slice, elasticity operations (vertical and horizontal) are tested and evaluated along with the time taken to deploy the slice infrastructure and the service. The main contributions of this paper are: (i) the design, implementation and integration of the CNS-AOM; (ii) the orchestration control-loop of the slice resources; and (iii) the execution of real proof-of-concept scenarios that demonstrate the feasibility of the CNS-AOM to instantiate and orchestrate services across geographically-distanced cities.},

    ABSTRACT = {Flexibility is considered a key feature of 5G softwarization to deliver a timely response to changes in network requirements that may be caused by traffic variation, user mobility, dynamic network function chains, slice lifecycle management operations, among others. In this article, we evolve the upf-bpf1 open-source project by proposing a new design to improve its flexibility by reducing the run-time adaptation time. The project proposes an in-kernel solution based on BPF and eXpress Data Path (XDP) for 5G User Plane Function (UPF) implementations. The Just-In-Time (JIT) compilation may have a huge impact on the adaptation time due to the in-kernel verification of the BPF programs at run-time. Our results show latency improvements of around 95% to inject the BPF program into the Linux kernel. Furthermore, the solution keeps the same functionalities and delivers a packet processing performance of around 10–11 Mpps using 6 cores with almost 70% of the CPU utilization in downlink/uplink directions.},

By allowing an operator to flexibly provide dedicated logical networks with (virtualized) functionalities over a common physical infrastructure, network slicing candidates itself as a prominent solution to support V2X over upcoming programmable and softwarized 5G systems in a business-agile manner. In this paper, a network slicing framework is proposed along with relevant building blocks and mechanisms to support V2X applications by flexibly orchestrating multi-access and edge-dominated 5G network infrastructures, especially with reference to roaming scenarios. Proof of concept experiments using the Mininet emulator showcase the viability and potential benefits of the proposed framework for cooperative driving use cases.},

    abstract = {In today\&\#x2019;s optical networks, the capacity supported by a single optical fiber is far higher than the demand between source\&\#x2013;destination pairs. Thus, to take advantage of the installed capacity, lightpaths allocated between distinct source\&\#x2013;destination pairs share the capacity provided by an optical fiber. This sharing is only possible if these lightpaths have different wavelengths. With the exponential evolution of traffic, the demand between source\&\#x2013;destination pairs in a network can approach or exceed the capacity of a single fiber. In this scenario, space-division multiplexing (SDM) networks appear as a viable option, and new network-sharing technologies become relevant. In this paper, we study different switching approaches for SDM networks with uncoupled spatial superchannels\&\#x2014;such as networks with multicore fibers or bundles of single-mode fibers\&\#x2014;which result in different network-sharing strategies. We start by comparing three switching architectures considering the evolution of traffic over time: (1) full-spectrum spatial switching (full-spectrum SS); (2) wavelength switching (WS) of uncoupled spatial superchannels; and (3) independent switching (IS) of spatial and wavelength channels. IS provides high network flexibility at the cost of complex switching nodes. On the other hand, full-spectrum SS and WS simplify network nodes but reduce flexibility by switching superchannels. Simulation results indicate that WS offers poor utilization in the long term. Full-spectrum SS, in contrast, exhibits low utilization in the short term, but outperforms IS in the long term. We also propose alternative hybrid switching strategies that start with IS and change to full-spectrum SS after a certain number of spatial channels are activated. The simulations suggest that well-designed strategies for migration from IS to full-spectrum SS delay premature activation investments while saving on switching costs.},

    of IP address depletion and scaling in routing is the address reuse
    solution placing Network Address Translators (NAT) at the borders of
    stub domains. In this article, we propose an implementation of NAT
    using Programming Protocol-Independent Packet Processors (P4)
    language, taking advantage of its features such as target-agnostic
    dataplane programmability. Through the MACSAD compiler, we generate a
    software switch that achieves high performance with for different

    per-domain paths and network functions for a given service request.

    abstract = {Packet Processor Programming, Software Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) are different technologies involved in network programming, typi- cally known as Network "Softwarization". This trend is already a reality in the Telecom- munications and Information Technology and Communication industry. The network pro- grammability seeks to optimize costs, automate processes, and offer new services with the flexibility and agility to create them. The “Softwarization" is creating the conditions for reinventing the network and service architectures. This mini-course has the follow- ing objectives: to present a bottom-up vision in the area of network programming; to approach the principles of programming in the data plane presenting the P4 language; define data forwarding technology through the OpenFlow protocol (SDN); to present the network function virtualization in the orchestration of services; and finally, to discuss the main challenges in the area of network programming. Thus, the mini-course will provide the participants the main points of the network "softwarization" with focus on the current tendencies for several lines of research.},
